This course will aim to familiarize nuclear safeguards practitioners with data science tools and methods, while introducing data scientists to the world of nuclear safeguards. This course will strive to illuminate the intersection of these two disciplines while fostering large discussion of potential opportunities. The key objectives of the course are to:

» Learn about safeguards most pressing problems, available data, and research and development (R&D) priorities
The Data Science for Safeguards Practitioners Course is designed for safeguards practitioners and data scientists alike, who will benefit from a greater understanding of data science tools and methods, and the world of safeguards. This is also a great opportunity to network with peers across different laboratories within the complex. The participants should have familiarity with coding languages, such as Python, as well as the fundamental goals of international safeguards.
Course tuition is free. However, PNNL does not provide stipends or funding to cover travel-related expenses. While the course is open to participants from all nationalities, PNNL is not able to provide any assistance with visas.
This 4-day course will feature classroom seminars, hands-on exercises, and a tour of the Virtual Reality (VR) Room. Below are the planned topics for the course. A final agenda will be provided to the students selected for the course.
»Safeguards 101: Students will learn about the role and importance of international safeguards as it applies to international security, and how data science can be applied to the safeguards domain.
»Machine Learning Concepts: Students will learn about the Machine Learning (ML)landscape and relate concepts to safeguards problems.
»Artificial Intelligence: Students will learn about the Artificial Intelligence (AI) landscape and relate concepts to safeguards problems.
»Data Science Methods: Students will learn about and relate data science concepts like Graph Analysis and Natural Language Processing to safeguards problems.
»Virtual Reality Room Tour: The class will take a tour of PNNL’s VR room and interact with tools created on the PNNL campus.
